BASTAKIYA ART Fair!
The annual fringe Bastakiya Art Fair in Dubai got off to a glamourous start this evening, with the city's 'it' crowd out in full force in their Monday best! Held in the stunning heritage village of Bastikiya, the fair has become a must see destination for the fashion and art crowd alike. A Potpourri of Cultures in Dubai
The only fringe art event of the Middle East, the Bastakiya Art Fair 2010, got underway in a simple yet powerful language of art on Monday. With the presence of over 200 budding as well as established local and international artists, BAF 2010 opening proved to be one big artistic jamboree it
promised to be. Held under the patronage of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and organised by XVA gallery, BAF – now in its fourth year – is bigger and better than its three predecessors, hosting more artists, more galleries and more
performances. MORE>>

Ethiopian Artists Take to Global Art Scene
When Frenchman Leo Lefort first heard he was being assigned to be a curator in Ethiopia, he was horrified at the very thought. Despite his reservations about the place, he went on to
Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia — and was relieved to find it a “very beautiful city” and “everything but what people know of it.” In Dubai for the Bastakiya Art Fair 2010, Lefort is one of the curators participating for the first time this year. He will be showcasing the works of 14 Ethiopian artists, whose themes vary from refugees to land disputes — even falling angels. The projects he works on are interesting and powerful in their own right. Currently, he is working on one called Hotel Distopia , Room #25/55. Those, he says, are the coordinates you can find him on, if you were to enter them in Google Earth. “I’m trying to do the same project in other places too, such as New York and France.” MORE>>

Bastakiya Art Fair
As a tribute to — and an endorsement of — the growing art movement in Dubai, the Bastakiya Art Fair (BAF) is organised by the XVA Gallery. The brainchild of Mona Hauser, owner of XVA Gallery, the fair is now in its fourth year, and has been showcasing the best the region has to offer; it has been renamed from the Creek Art Fair in 2009. Field for a new crop
At this time of the year, artists, either Emiratis or foreigners, are restless. A group of them are left alone with their tools of painting and brushes, producing new collections, while others select a unique bunch from their photography or any other art they find extraordinary and showcase it at the Bastakiya Art Fair (BAF) - an event that has made Dubai a hub for art and artists. Emirati art is glowing at the BAF 2010, in its fourth edition this year, and is represented by a number of promising Emirati artists such as the sisters Meera and Maitha Al Huraiz. Meera practises an array of arts, including painting, mixed media and photography.
